This is Project 2045: Meeting a Future Where We Can All Flourish Together
The year 2045 and the coming “majority-minority”
America is heading into a big shift that is closer than most of us realize. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, by around 2045 no single racial or ethnic group will make up a majority of the country anymore. The U.S. is becoming “majority-minority.” Not that one group replaces white people as the most numerous, but that the country becomes more mixed overall.
Census projections show that the white, non-Hispanic share of the population is expected to drop below 50 percent for the first time in the country’s history. Latino, Black, Asian, multiracial, and other communities continue to grow. Demographer William H. Frey at the Brookings Institution calls this a “diversity explosion,” and he is clear that it is not some far-off idea. It is already happening. You can see it in schools, workplaces, and neighborhoods right now, especially among younger generations, who became majority non-white years ago.
These demographic trends are more than numbers. They mark a critical moment for America’s civic life and social imagination. How we talk about race, identity, and power today will shape how communities live together tomorrow. Pew Research Center finds that Americans hold a wide range of views about these shifts, with many seeing both opportunities and tensions in a future that looks different from the past.
This is Project 2045
Project 2045 is built on the belief that preparing for this future starts now, not only with data and forecasts, but with practice in honest, humble, and hopeful conversation. We are stepping into a moment that is technically twenty years ahead of us, but socially already here.
The question is not if America will change, but how we will change with it. Will it be with curiosity, courage, and grounded relationships, or with fear, division, and avoidance?
At the heart of Project 2045 is a simple but demanding conviction. We want to live in a world where all people can flourish together. Not by erasing difference, minimizing history, or pretending conflict does not exist, but by learning how to live with honesty, responsibility, and shared purpose in the midst of it.
Flourishing, in this vision, is not a zero-sum outcome where some must lose for others to thrive. It is a collective practice rooted in dignity, mutual responsibility, and the belief that our futures are bound together. Project 2045 exists to help people develop the relational skills and moral imagination required to move toward that kind of shared flourishing now and in the years ahead.
If we cannot move into this moment with integrity, courage, and responsibility, the cost will be measured in fractured relationships, hardened identities, and a widening inability to live together across difference. Fear will continue to outpace understanding, and power will keep shifting without repair or accountability. Communities will retreat into echo chambers. Institutions will struggle to lead with legitimacy. Everyday conversations will become sites of avoidance or conflict rather than connection. The future will still arrive, but without the skills to meet it well, we risk carrying unresolved harm forward and multiplying division rather than building a shared life capable of holding us all.
An Invitation
So join us if you want to live in a world where difference does not automatically mean division, where our kids inherit more than our unresolved fears, and where people learn how to live together with honesty, dignity, and shared responsibility. Join us if you believe flourishing is something we practice slowly, imperfectly, and together.
